NYC’s new tidal power turbine is online
After years of research and feasibility studies, a tidal power turbine was installed in the East River near Roosevelt Island, just off Manhattan (see video from the New York Times here). The turbine is the first generating tidal turbine to be installed in the pilot project, which is being run by Verdant Power.
As part of the test program, the turbine is generating power for a nearby Gristede’s grocery superstore. A total of six turbines will be installed by Verdant as part of the current project. If all goes well with the various environmental and functional tests, Verdant may then receive approval for a federal license to install hundreds of turbines in the immediate area.
