Remember Mom’s clothesline?
No, not the wrestling move (though my mom did have a mean atomic-suplex); the old fashioned clothesline, used to hang clothes to dry outside. Alexander Lee of Concord, featured in today’s New York Times, runs Project Laundry List, an advocacy group for simple lifestyle changes, including the right to dry one’s clothes outside. Line-drying clothes is no longer an inalienable right, as any member of a home-owners’ association can tell you. But, line-drying saves energy and money, and helps clothes last longer and smell better (I also happen to like how jeans get crispy when they’re line-dried).
On April 19, Project Laundry List will sponsor National Hanging Out Day, an annual advocacy event for promoting “right to dry” legislation. And as part of the Step It Up 2007 campaign for the National Day of Climate Action this Saturday (other local event sites are listed here), Mr. Lee will be at the State House in Concord–stringing a clothesline, of course.

I simply LOVE the Laundry Project idea.
With hanging laundry outside coming back into vogue, new “how-to” books will have to be printed to help a generation of people, who have forgotten how to hang out wet clothes to dry. For example, the sheets and towels should be hung on the outside lines, while the unmentionables go in between (so the neighbors don’t see your “unmentionables.”) lol

Perhaps *you* should write that book, “Old fashioned living for modern times.”
