Portsmouth continues with eco-municipality designation
On Thursday, Portsmouth outgoing mayor Steve Marchand, and mayor-elect Tom Ferrini signed a non-binding resolution designating Portsmouth an eco-municipality. By signing the resolution, the city council agrees to follow several guidelines, such as reducing dependence on fossil fuels and activities that harm life-sustaining ecosystems. According to the Portsmouth Herald, the Portsmouth resolution came about from a recommendation by the city’s Committee on Sustainable Practices, and this committee will continue to be active when Ferrini takes over as mayor. Eco-municipalities are also featured in the series of study circles on sustainability in the Seacoast area that were conducted in October and November of this year.
