2007 Carboney Awards: top under-achievers in energy and conservation

Carboney Awards, 2007Glamour comes to the Seacoast once again for the second annual Carboney Awards, my choices for 2007’s top under-achievers in (among others) the personal virtue of conservation.

perino The “Imagine the Lives Saved by Global Warming (not that we’re convinced it’s real, and it’s certainly not our fault) Award” is given to: Dana Perino!

As Press Secretary for the Bush Administration, Perino turned in a fine performance at this briefing when responding to reports that the White House “eviscerated” Center for Disease Control director Dr. Julie Gerberding’s Senate testimony on the “Human Impacts of Global Warming.”  Perino was happy to assert that the Administration wanted to focus that testimony on “public health benefits of climate change.”  Asked to explain what some of those benefits are, Perino said that climate change “would help those individuals” who “die from cold-related deaths every winter.”

Of course, Dr. Gerberdings’s original draft for her testimony made no such claims, and focused on the negative public health impacts of a hotter climate.  The original draft, and the Administration’s revision of her draft–which she then presented in testimony to Congress, are available via Science Progress.

Georgia drought The “Water Shortage? What Water Shortage? Award” is given to: Chris Carlos of Marietta Georgia!

Amid the drought baking Georgia, Carlos had no issue using 440,000 gallons of water at his home during the month of September, only 75 times the normal household consumption rate in Cobb County. After much public outrage, Carlos cut his consumption back to a mere 10 times the normal rate.

GW Bush The “Hey, We’re Really Concerned About this Global Warming Thing, Especially the Part Caused By the Other Guys Award” is given to:  President George W. Bush!

Satisfied to once again walk away from a leadership opportunity, the US signed on to a water-down accord–with its hard targets for emissions removed–on global warming in Bali, only to later issue a “signing statement” impugning the commitments of developing countries to the negotiating process.  Not exactly leadership by example.

ADM The “You Call it Food, We Call it High-Profit SUV Fuel Award” is given to:  a least favorite agri-giant, ADM!

ADM, long a recipient of federal largesse, continues to use its clout to push ethanol production from corn, despite the barely-break-even energy balance, and the increasing costs to those who use corn as a food source.

more and more traffic The “Wow-gas-is-so-expensive-I’m-really-going-to-change-my-life-this-time…oh-never-mind Award” is once again given to:  All of us!  Second year running!
