NH HB 1434 passes House and Senate
Both the New Hampshire House and Senate have passed New Hampshire House Bill 1434, which would commit the state to a cap-and-trade program for carbon emissions as part of the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative. New Hampshire and nine other member states of the RGGI have agreed to propose laws and/or regulations by the end of 2008 to establish a framework for implementing RGGI in their respective states.
NH Governor John Lynch released this statement upon the passage of the bill this week:
Cutting greenhouse gas pollution is the right thing to do for the health of our citizens, the health of our environment and the health of our economy. Joining the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative will allow New Hampshire to cut the emissions that contribute to global climate change, increase energy efficiency, and in the long-term will help consumers save on energy costs.
Our nine neighboring states are already committed to moving forward with RGGI and it is important we partner with them. I want to thank lawmakers for recognizing the importance of passing legislation allowing New Hampshire to join the RGGI and all the stakeholders who worked to ensure we are not getting left behind –NH Governor John Lynch, May 21, 2008
