Taking biodiesel one step further
One way to avoid the controversy of making biofuels from foodstocks is to make it directly from waste cooking oil–and better still if you process it first and don’t simply dump the oil straight in your fuel tank. Ben Holmes, owner of Rye Beach Landscaping, has been doing just that for four years now, powering his company’s […]

Do not bust this myth at home
A favorite show, Mythbusters, is not exactly my favorite example of science on television, but it is entertaining none the less. But watching this episode recently reminded the me of the danger of a little bit of knowledge.
Adam and Jamie show that it’s possible to run a diesel-powered car using nothing more than used, filtered, […]

Local interest and research in biofuels
This article in the Portsmouth Herald provides a nice summary of biofuel sources and technologies, including the biofuels research taking place at UNH. Particularly interesting (at least to me) is the research taking place on biodiesel production from algae.

NH HB 1631 to promote biofuels for state vehicles and buildings
New Hampshire House Bill 1631 will require that the state purchase biodiesel for state vehicles, and bio-heating oil (often referred to by the trade name, BioHeat) for state-owned buildings that currently heat with oil. Sponsored by Representative David Borden (D-New Castle), and co-sponsored by Representatives Suzanne Harvey (D-Nashua) and James Devine (R-Sandown), and Senators Harold […]

Simply Green steps in to help
When homeowners in the Biddeford region were defrauded by heating oil dealer Nicholas Curro–who took their deposit money and then didn’t deliver oil–the Stratham-based biofuels dealer Simply Green stepped in, and offered, at cost, BioHeat heating oil to Curro’s former customers.
BioHeat is the trademarked name given to a blend of Number 2 heating oil and […]

BioHeat makes the local news
Amy Kane, who blogs at Atlantic Avenue, has a nice article in today’s Portsmouth Herald about BioHeat, the blend of biofuels (typically soybean oil) and heating oil that can be used for home heating. Offered in the Seacoast area by Simply Green, Lamprey Brothers, and Proulx Oil and Propane–and hopefully others soon–BioHeat is competitively priced, has […]
