At the UNH Energy Conference

I had the good fortune to attend part of the UNH Energy Conference, held June 20-21 at the UNH Durham campus.  I went there not for purposes of work or networking, but simply to learn about more geeky energy stuff.  I was not disappointed, and judging by the reactions and enthusiasm I saw, I believe the other […]

Do not bust this myth at home

A favorite show, Mythbusters, is not exactly my favorite example of science on television, but it is entertaining none the less.  But watching this episode recently reminded the me of the danger of a little bit of knowledge.
Adam and Jamie show that it’s possible to run a diesel-powered car using nothing more than used, filtered, […]

Gas-tax holidays, lapel pins, and other elitist ideas

With the price of gasoline approaching $4 per gallon, and the price of diesel already exceeding that level, many are asking what the Congress, and our Presidential candidates, will do to reduce gas prices.
Exactly the wrong question.
There is very little the Congress, the President, or the government in general can do to influence the price […]

Almost too freaky to watch

Those younger than 40 need not continue reading.  But others might remember an episode of the show Room 222, in which the students from Walt Whitman High enter an auto race–to see which team can get the best gas mileage.  I was nine at the time, and yes, I remember watching the episode.  I’m pretty […]

New England start-up seeking hydrokinetic power on Ol’ Man River

The St. Louis Dispatch reported last week that start-up company Free Flow Power, based in Gloucester, Massachusetts, has obtained preliminary permitting to test hydrokinetic power installations on the Mississippi River.
Hydrokinetic power makes use of swiftly flowing rivers or tides to turn windmill-like turbines, which in turn generate electricity.  Hydrokinetic power is distinct from traditional hydro […]

Skysails video

Via EcoGeek, I learned of this very cool video showing the MV Beluga SkySails (aka, the kite ship) in action, deploying its sail:

For futher information, I have previously posted about the SkySails here and here.

Lights out languishes locally

Dave Brooks, who blogs at GraniteGeek, reports that the lights-out program for Earth Hour had little or no impact on electricity consumption in the region (though I myself may have saved a few pennies on my electric bill).
My guess is that very few people in the region knew about Earth Hour, and even fewer cared.  […]

US oil production increases (barely); imports down

For the first time since 1991, US crude oil production actually increased in 2007, according to data released by the US Energy Information Agency.  US production in 2007 totalled 1.862 billion barrels, an increase of just 182,000 barrels (or one one-hundreth of one percent) over 2006.  Although the year-over-year increase is very small, it is the first […]

Lights out for Earth Hour

The World Wildlife Federation is sponsoring a worldwide event, Earth Hour, on March 29 from 8 to 9 pm.  The objective of Earth Hour is to encourage as many households and businesses as possible to turn out their lights, shut off their tv sets, and enjoy an hour of quiet darkness.   Created to take a […]
